Petroleum Product Colorimeter
The petroleum product colorimeter is a testing instrument specially designed to measure the color of petroleum products such as lubricating oils and diesel oils. It compares the color of the sample with standard color filters by colorimetric method to obtain the color number. It is widely applied in petrochemical, power industry, quality inspection and scientific‑research fields.
Working Principle and Applicable Standards
The petroleum product colorimeter operates mainly based on the colorimetric principle. The built‑in standard light source illuminates both the sample and standard color filters, and the colors of the two are compared simultaneously through an optical eyepiece.
- Core Principle: Pour the petroleum product sample into a color‑comparison tube, and compare it one by one with No.1‑25 standard colored glass filters on the standard color disk. When the sample color matches one filter, the number of that filter is taken as the color number.
- Main Applicable Standards Domestic Standards: SH/T 0168‑92 Test Method for Color of Petroleum Products, GB/T 6540 Test Method for Color of Petroleum Products, DL/T 429.2‑2016 Test Method for Color of Oils Used in Electric Power System.
International Standards: ASTM D1500 Standard Test Method for Color of Petroleum Products, ISO 2049 Petroleum products — Determination of colour (Colorimetric method).
‑ Differences among different color measurement methods ‑ ASTM D1500 Color: Applied to lubricating oils, diesel oils, mineral insulating oils, etc. Color number range: 0.5‑8.0. ‑ Saybolt Color: Applied to refined products such as gasoline and aviation fuels. Color number range: ‑16 to +30. ‑ Pt‑Co / Hazen / APHA Color: Applied to transparent liquids such as water and chemicals.
Common Models and Technical Parameters
Petroleum product colorimeters fall into two categories: manual type and fully‑automatic type. Different models fit different application scenarios.
‑Lucyelec SD01 Petroleum Color Scale ASTM D1500 Colorimeter ‑ compliant with ASTM D1500, ISO 2049 and other standards, measuring range: 0.5‑8.0 ASTM color scale.
Technical parameters: Light source: 220V/100W/2750±50K internally frosted bulb; inner diameter of color‑comparison tube: Φ32 mm, height: 120‑130 mm; standard color disk with 26 apertures (25 color numbers + 1 blank aperture); color range: No.1‑25. ‑ Power consumption: generally less than 500 W; operating ambient temperature: 5 ℃‑40 ℃; humidity ≤85%.

Operating Procedures
Standard operating procedures shall be followed for the petroleum product colorimeter to ensure accurate and reliable measurement results.
‑ Pre‑test Preparation Check that power supply voltage is stable at AC 220 V±10 %; ambient temperature: 5 ℃‑40 ℃; humidity ≤85 %. Samples shall be clear and transparent. Turbid samples shall be filtered in advance, and sample temperature shall be close to room temperature. Clean the color‑comparison tube with suitable solvent and dry it completely to eliminate residues.
‑ Test Operation Switch on the instrument and preheat for 5‑10 minutes to stabilize the light source. Pour the sample slowly along the inner wall of the color‑comparison tube to a height of approx.120 mm, avoid bubble formation. Place the sample‑filled color‑comparison tube into the tube slot of the instrument. Observe through the optical eyepiece, adjust focus for clear vision and adjust light for even illumination. Rotate the standard color disk slowly, start comparison from lower color numbers. Record the color number when sample color is substantially consistent with one standard filter. If sample color lies between two adjacent color numbers, report the darker one.
‑ Maintenance Calibrate standard colored glass filters with calibrated color‑comparison solution every six months. Replace or recalibrate filters when color difference exceeds one color number. Maintain optical system regularly. Replace bulbs with identical specifications when light intensity drops. Do not touch the standard color disk with bare hands. Remove sample residues and wipe instrument surface after testing. Cut off power and fit dust‑proof cover for long‑term storage. Calibration is recommended every 3‑6 months.
Question: Which petroleum products require ASTM D1500 color test?
ASTM D1500 is mainly applicable to light‑colored, transparent or semi‑transparent refined petroleum products. It is used to evaluate refining degree, oxidation stability and contamination level. Typical test samples include insulating oils, lubricating oils (hydraulic oils, turbine oils, gear oils, etc.), diesel oils, kerosene, petroleum waxes, etc. ASTM D1500 color number ranges from 0.5 (lightest) to 8.0 (darkest). It is technically equivalent to Chinese national standard GB/T 6540, and serves as a key indicator for trade acceptance, quality control and aging monitoring.
