Understanding BDV Testing of Transformer Oil

 

Ⅰ. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗕𝗗𝗩?

Breakdown Voltage (BDV), also known as dielectric strength, is the voltage at which electrical breakdown occurs in transformer oil under specified test conditions.
Transformer oil serves as both an insulating and cooling medium. Testing its dielectric strength is essential for assessing oil quality and supporting reliable transformer operation.

 

Ⅱ. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗶𝘀 𝗕𝗗𝗩 𝗧𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝗢𝘂𝘁?
 

1. Collect a representative oil sample carefully to prevent contamination.
2. Pour the sample into a clean BDV test cup fitted with electrodes.
3. Set the electrode gap to 2.5 mm, as specified by the applicable test method.
4. Gradually increase the AC voltage at approximately 2 kV/s until electrical breakdown occurs, following IEC 60156.
5. Record the breakdown voltage and evaluate the results against the applicable acceptance criteria.

Ⅲ. 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗼 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘁 𝗕𝗗𝗩 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘀?
 

• 30–40 kV: May be acceptable under certain specifications, depending on the application and oil condition.
• 50 kV and above: Generally indicates good dielectric strength, subject to the applicable requirements.
• Below 30 kV: Warrants further investigation and appropriate corrective action, such as filtration or dehydration, depending on the test results and oil condition.
• Note: These are illustrative values, not universal acceptance limits. Actual requirements depend on the applicable standard, transformer specifications, and oil condition.
